The House on the Dune

La maison sur la dune, by Niels Thorez and Odile Santi

A young girl finds herself confronted with her mother’s surprising silence during a stay at her family’s beach house after her grandmother passes away. Every day, Lou’s mother sets off on her own to wander the forest and the dunes. Lou is bored and doesn’t know how to keep herself busy. One day, she stumbles upon an old photo of her mother and grandmother shaking the sand from their boots after going to the beach. The following day, she joins her mother on her walk. When they return from the beach, they smile, remove their boots, and shake off the sand, in exactly the same way that Lou’s mother and grandmother did decades earlier. Together mother and daughter discover a way to keep precious traditions alive through small acts that speak volumes about life and love.
