Tom and I

Tom et moi, by Nadine Brun-Cosme

Tom, the family dog, has been a little boy’s companion since his birth and over the years has become his best friend. The child doesn’t have a single memory, not of a walk, not of a game, in which Tom was not at his side. But one morning, Tom is nowhere to be found. Without him, the little boy discovers that nothing is the same. So to make Tom’s absence a reality and overcome his grief, he begins amassing a pile of things that remind him of his faithful friend in a corner of his closet: a piece of a leash, a ball, an autumn leaf, blades of fresh grass, the net from a basketball hoop. He’s afraid he might forget Tom, that his memories may fade. It is only when he finally understands that he needs to stop waiting for Tom to return and relegate the dog to memory, that he must accept that his absence as definitive, that all of a sudden, Tom reappears!
