Four Tales by Andersen

Quatre contes d’Andersen, by Hans Christian Andersen and illustrated by Elisabeth Ivanovsky

Published in 1942 in Antwerp, this book presents four of Hans Christian Andersen’s first tales that are illustrated by Elisabeth Ivanovsky: The Lighter, Little Claus and Big Claus, The Princess and the Pea and Thumbelina.
This is the first time Elisabeth Ivanovsky’s pictures are reprinted in the four-colour process (blue, red and two browns). Born in Moldavia, she was trained in the USSR before emigrating to Belgium in 1932. She was one of the leading children’s books illustrators of the 20th century: more than three hundred of her books and two hundred co-publications have been published in some 20 languages.
